How can I become a resident of Alabama?
What are the requirements of becoming a permanent resident in Alabama? I'm a u.s citizen but I've lived overseas all my life. I'll be moving to alabama for college and would like to apply for in-state tuition. Thing is I don't have any family there and I'm a dependent of a non-american... Helpful answers would be greatly appreciated.

You have to be married to a family member in order to live in Alabama.

You need to prove you're a resident to get instate tuition. For that you need an address in Alabama and you also need to have received mail at that address for some time. Next you get yourself an ID (license, learner's permit or state ID would work) from the DMV (they will ask you to bring mail with your Alabama address on it.) Then you go to your school's registrar's office, present them with your brand new shining ID, and hoopla they change you to an instate student. This will take as long as it will take you to get an Alabama license. Good luck!

Alabama, like other states, restricts resident tuition to persons who have been residing in Alabama for purposes other than to obtain an education, and who are able to demonstrate contacts with the State of Alabama that indicate an intent to remain in this state.? Resident tuition status is determined by the University, with regard to Alabama law, and the policies of the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama System and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Application for Classification as an Alabama Resident for Tuition Purposes, which must be completed in its entirety, will help UAB assess whether the applicant may qualify for residency status for tuition purposes. Do not complete an application unless requested to do so by the Admission?s office. (See link below) Alabama Code as well as UA system and UAB policies declare that a resident student is one who: 1. at the time of initial registration, is not a minor (below the age of 19) and is a resident of the state of Alabama and has been a resident of the state for at least one year immediately preceding the date of registration; or 2. is a minor and whose supporting person(s) is a resident of the state of Alabama and has been a resident of the state for at least one year immediately preceding the date of initial registration. Classification of students as non-resident students or resident students shall be made at the time of their initial registration and shall continue unchanged through all subsequent registrations at the institution until satisfactory evidence to the contrary is submitted at the time of any subsequent registration. The Division of Student Affairs, the Graduate School, and the admissions/registration offices of the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry, Nursing, and Public Health are designated as the offices empowered at UAB to determine and certify resident students.? To be classified as a resident for tuition purposes, you must furnish evidence in support of your claim to resident status. Application for change of residency and supporting documentation must be submitted as soon as possible after the request is made but no later than May 15th. You should NOT complete this application unless requested to do so. Unless your admissions/registration officer notifies you that your classification has been changed to resident student, your classification in the university is non-resident for tuition purposes.
