Football was such a different game in the early era. It was more of regional sport than a national sport so if you won the Ivy League you were the national champion. The modern era is generally thought to be the AP poll era from 1936 on. In that period, Notre Dame and Alabama are tied for most championships with 8.

As far as total championship selections from major selectors by school, Alabama ranks 5th with 17 behind Notre Dame (21), Michigan (22), Yale (27), and Princeton (28). But those don't really matter. As far as how many the school actually claims, Alabama ranks 3rd with 13 behind Yale (26) and Princeton (28). Currently, when counting championships, ESPN and whatnot only include the MAJOR POLL titles (AP/Coaches) from 1936 to present. And I personally don't think that's a bad idea. Alabama has 8 major poll titles and is tied with Notre Dame. They both have the most out of all other schools. Oklahoma and USC both have 7. Miami, Nebraska, and Ohio State have 5. So to answer your question, nobody has more championships than Bama and if they have a repeat in 2010, they will have the MOST major poll championships.

That depends, but Alabama has more national titles than any other school in an actual college championship game, all of those princeton titles and yale titles are when the football keauge was limited to the east coast mostly and a champion was picked by voters and polls. But back in the 1920s when they came up with the idea of a championship game, Yale and Princeton were irrelevant and Alabama has been dominant since
